A trade fair is an event with a marketing background that is limited in time and is usually repeated annually. In contrast to public fairs , it enables manufacturers or sellers of goods or services to display, explain and sell them. It is thus a sub-form of the sample fair . B2B contacts are also often made .

Trade fairs (as defined by the AUMA Exhibition and Trade Fair Committee ) have a significantly higher proportion (over 50%) of trade visitors than public fairs.

There are trade fairs that are almost exclusively used by trade visitors (such as mechanical engineering fairs or consumer goods fairs, which often only allow trade visitors), and those that also have a significant proportion of private visitors (such as construction fairs). Conversely, public fairs can be aimed almost exclusively at the public (such as boat fairs, regional public fairs) or at the same time have a significant proportion of specialist visitors (e.g. the IFA in Berlin). In addition, there are mixed forms that are aimed at both target groups to the same extent (e.g. FIBO in Essen or photokina in Cologne) as well as trade visitor fairs at which the public is permitted at certain times (e.g. the International furniture fair in Cologne).

The differentiation between trade fairs (primarily aimed at trade visitors) and exhibitions (primarily aimed at private visitors), as described in the trade regulations, has lost its importance in practice today.
