The Automechanika has approximately 4,600 exhibitors, the world's largest trade fair for the automotive industry with a focus on the aftermarket . It takes place every two years (even years) alternating with the IAA Cars (International Motor Show) on the exhibition grounds in Frankfurt . In contrast to the IAA, the Automechanika is a pure trade fair.

history

On January 20, 1971, the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), as the organizer of the International Motor Show, canceled the IAA Cars, which was to take place in September of the same year. Association President Dr. Johann Heinrich von Brunn suggested that the automotive industry would have to take cost-cutting measures due to high costs. At almost 100 million D-Marks, the costs of the exhibition are too high compared to the business income. The cancellation would have caused the Frankfurt exhibition company to have lost at least 1.5 to 2 million D-Marks.

In mid-March 1971, Messe Frankfurt announced that there would be a replacement Automechanika 71 exhibition for the canceled IAA date . The initiative for this came from the Würzburg motor journalist Joachim Lattke, who was able to win over associations of the motor vehicle trade and the petrol station and garage trade, as they wanted to present their products despite the cancellation of the IAA. The manufacturers of products for everything to do with cars made up 90 percent of the exhibitors at the IAA Cars. Some of the first exhibitors at Automechanika founded the ASA (Automobile Service Equipment) association in 1972.

The first Automechanika took place from September 18 to 26, 1971. There were around 400 exhibitors and 75,000 visitors at the fair. In 1972 the fair was held again and then every two years, alternating with the IAA.

development

The Agora open space is located between the exhibition halls of Messe Frankfurt. At Automechanika 2012, the Bertha Benz Challenge was a guest with innovative electric and hybrid vehicles.

The Automechanika last took place from September 13 to 17, 2016 in Frankfurt. A total of 4,820 (2014: 4,660) exhibitors presented their products and applications on 177,317 m² of net exhibition space. Around 136,000 visitors came over the five days of the fair (2014: 137,982). Much discussed topics were connected vehicles, the workshop of the future, alternative drives and autonomous driving. With Tomorrow's Service & Mobility, the trade fair has created its own subject area in the festival hall.

The next 25th edition of Automechanika Frankfurt will take place from September 11th to 15th, 2018. At the same time, REIFEN will take place, licensed by Messe Essen, as a co-located show in the new Hall 12 on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds.

Automechanika is one of the most successful trade visitor fairs and has firmly established itself over the years.
