Joachim Friedrich Gotthelf von Zezschwitz (born May 5, 1740 in Piskowitz near Kamenz , †  June 28, 1820 there ) was a Saxon general of the cavalry .

Life

He was the younger brother and successor of the also Saxon general of the cavalry Hans Gottlob von Zezschwitz and came from the Meißnischen nobility family Zezschwitz .

In 1758, Zezschwitz became Premier Lieutenant in the "Graf Vitzthum" cuirassier regiment. He took part in the “von Benkendorff” regiment in the War of the Bavarian Succession . 1786 he was appointed colonel adjutant general of the Elector Friedrich August III. appointed.

In 1789 he was given command of the Chevaulegers regiment " Prince Karl von Kurland ", in 1792 he was promoted to major general and head of the Carabiniers regiment. In 1795/96 he commanded the Saxon cavalry on the Rhine, became lieutenant general in 1800 and was again at the head of the Saxon cavalry in the autumn campaign of 1806 under the command of his brother.

During the mobilization to fight Austria in 1809 he was given command of the 16,500 strong Saxon contingent , which belonged to the 9th Corps of the French Army under Marshal Bernadotte , Prince of Pontecorvo . In addition to his duties as the highest officer in the auxiliary force , he was in command of the 1st of the two Saxon divisions, which were joined by a weak French one. The achievements of the Saxons in the Battle of Wagram on July 5th and 6th earned him Bernadotte's high recognition, Napoleon admitted their value only reluctantly.

During the reorganization of the Saxon army in 1810, he was put on waiting as general of the cavalry and retired in 1815. He died unmarried at his place of birth in 1820.

Honors

Zezschwitz's services were honored with the award of the Knight's Cross and the Commander's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry on August 10, 1796 and August 4, 1809, respectively. He was also a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
