The BIOFACH is the world's largest trade fair and the world's leading trade fair for ecological consumer goods. It takes place every February for four days (Wed - Sat, until 2009: Thu - Sun) on the exhibition grounds of the city of Nuremberg . BIOFACH is organized by the Nuremberg Exhibition Center , with IFOAM , the global umbrella organization of organic farming associations, assuming the patronage . BIOFACH was founded by the trade fair organizers Hubert Rottner, Hagen Sunder and Jürgen Ries with various previous events at various locations. In 2001 Messe Nürnberg acquired the event rights. Only trade visitors are admitted.

Since 2007, the natural cosmetics sector has been combined in the independent VIVANESS trade fair, which is held in parallel in the exhibition center.

BIOFACH and VIVANESS Congress

BIOFACH and VIVANESS will be accompanied by a congress. In 2017, 8,125 participants took advantage of the industry and knowledge forum with over 120 individual dates for information and networking. Overall, the “Global Market Overview” event attracted the most visitors with over 240 visitors. Market research also met with particular interest at the VIVANESS Congress. The lecture “Natural Cosmetics Year 2016: Review and Outlook” counted over 100 participants.

Market environment

According to the IFOAM annual report 2014, the area under cultivation for organic products was 37.5 million hectares in 2012 , which corresponds to around 0.87% of the global arable land. The organic farm produce market in the same year was $ 63.8 billion. The three largest markets in this order were the USA, Germany and France. 88 countries have binding regulations on organic farming and 164 have organic seals . In Nuremberg alone there are over 2,000 certified organic farms.

In 2016, German households spent around 9.9% more money on organic food and beverages than in the previous year. According to the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW), the turnover was 9.48 billion euros . With a market share of 8.5% and a volume of EUR 1.15 billion, the German natural cosmetics market is the strongest market in Europe, according to the joint survey by natural cosmetics konzepte, GfK, IRI, IMShealth and BioVista.
