The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM; since 2015 IFOAM - Organics International) is an international association with the aim of introducing ecological, social and economically sensible systems around the world based on the principles of organic agriculture . The membership directory 2015 includes approx. 800 organizations in approx. 120 countries.
history
The association was founded in 1972 by the then president of the French organic farmers' association "Nature et Progrès". At first there was no hierarchical organizational structure. Responsible persons only had to be determined because of the legal requirements for a non-profit organization. Claude Aubert was thus appointed the first general secretary. The current president (as of 2018) is Peggy Miars (USA). Just three years after it was founded by the five original members, the association had grown to 50 members from 17 nations.
In 1984 the board of directors, which had been introduced in the meantime, was re-elected and prepared the appointment of a full-time managing director. This became necessary because the number of members had meanwhile grown to over 100 and increased to over 500 in the following years. The professionalization progressed, which was also evident from the fact that more and more members from the business world (processors, traders) took part. In the 1990s, the organization entered into cooperation with international actors, above all the UN and the FAO . Scientific exchange is promoted with its own conferences and the activities can be tackled in special groups.
The headquarters of the main office is in Bonn- Gronau .
In addition to other activities, IFOAM has developed a standard for ecological agriculture and a framework for ecological certifications . B. was the EC organic regulation .
IFOAM family of standards
IFOAM introduced the IFOAM family of standards in 2011. This approach aims to ensure the harmonization and comparability of organic standards and organic regulations. The IFOAM family of standards enables organic standards to be checked for quality and compliance with the principles of organic farming on the basis of a single assessment basis - the COROS (Common Objectives and Requirements of Organic Standards). Bilateral agreements on the mutual recognition of organic standards will become obsolete and organic certification and international trade in organic products will be simplified.
