The fair offers the entire spectrum of metalworking technology, such as cutting, dividing, removing and forming machine tools , manufacturing systems, precision tools, automated material flow, computer technology, industrial electronics and accessories.

The organizer's website states: “As the leading trade fair for metalworking, EMO is unsurpassed in terms of the breadth and depth of the range. It extends over all production areas from machine tools and precision tools to interlinking devices and industrial electronics. "

The Association of German Machine Tool Builders (VDW), which has been holding trade fairs since 1920, has been entrusted with the organizational implementation of EMO Hanover . The EMO is organized on the initiative and under the auspices of the European Committee for the Cooperation of Machine Tool Industries ( CECIMO ). The VDW organizes the EMO twice in a row in the "odd" years in Hanover . Every six years the Italian machine tool association UCIMU organizes the EMO in Milan. The cycle “Hanover - Hanover - Milan” is set to 2015.

The first EMO took place in Paris in 1975. At that time, 1,369 exhibitors from all over the world shared around 94,000 m² of net exhibition space. The original order of the venues was "Paris - Hanover - Milan - Hanover". Since 2005 the EMO has been taking place in the cycle “Hanover - Hanover - Milan”.

The first EMO in Hanover in 1977 saw a significant increase in the number of exhibitors (1,619) and the exhibition area (116,675 m²) compared to the first event in Paris. The second EMO Hannover in 1981 again clearly exceeded the result, 1,845 exhibitors occupied 140,558 m². The increasing internationalization turned the initially strongly European trade fair into a world exhibition. 234 companies from 21 countries outside Western Europe were represented in Hanover in 1981. The 1985 EMO in Hanover was another success. The exhibition area increased to over 158,000 m². The events in 1985 and 1989 made the technical change in metalworking clear. The number of production cells and workshop-programmable machines on display increased significantly - CAD / CAM and sensor and diagnostic technology were the buzzwords of that time.

In 1989 the largest exhibition area in the world in Hanover reached its capacity limits. At EMO 1989, 2,149 exhibitors took part and thus occupied 187,000 m² of exhibition space.
