The Association of German Machine Tool Builders e. V. (VDW) is an association of companies that are based in Germany and produce machine tools . It was founded on December 7, 1891 in Hanover and is now based in Frankfurt am Main . It represents the interests of its members, for example vis-à-vis the legislature and other institutions.

The VDW consists of several working groups. Each working group deals with a specific topic, such as control technology, and is usually headed by a member of the management of a member company.
The VDW finances itself through contributions from its member companies and through surpluses from its trade fair activities.
The association is a member of the European association of machine tool manufacturers CECIMO ( Comité de coopération des industries de la machine-outil ).
activities
- The Research Association for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology e. V. (FWF) was founded in 1922 and spun off from the VDW in 1999. It forms a bridge to technical universities. Projects related to production technology are funded.
- The VDW has been sponsoring the technology category of the Ernst Schneider Prize since 2003 .
- Since 2008, the VDW has been supporting the AMB (International Mechanical Engineering Fair) in Stuttgart as an "ideal sponsor". The focus here is on machining technology.
- The VDW is the organizer of the EMO Hannover and METAV trade fairs .
Members
The machine tool industry in Germany is primarily characterized by medium-sized companies. Most of the members are based in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria . Most of your customers are automobile manufacturers and suppliers. The main competitors come from Japan, South Korea and Italy.
