Facade of the Thalia Theater at the Alstertor

The street Alstertor (formerly "Alsterthor") in downtown Hamburg is reminiscent of a city gate that used to be located here . It runs from the eastern bank of the Inner Alster or Ballindamm about 200 meters southeast to Rosenstrasse and Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz (formerly horse market). It is a commercial street with cars and pedestrians and has the official road code A116.

The Thalia Theater is located on the eastern side between Rosenstrasse and the crossing Raboisen Strasse , and on the opposite side is the Thaliahof office building ; At the intersection of Alstertor and the Ferdinandstrasse / Hermannstrasse street, at the corner points are the office buildings of the MM Warburg & Co. , Merck Finck & Co , Credit Suisse , Hogan Lovells law firm and the five-storey "Haus Alsterthor" built in 1900. Up to Ballindamm, the last two buildings mentioned are connected to more modern commercial buildings with five to seven floors.

Between the northern end of the Alsterthor street and the bank of the Inner Alster, the factory and prison with the "Zuchthausstraße" was located from 1618 to 1842 , which later became the Alsterdamm and later Ballindamm.
