The Metro Station Ritterstraße is a tunnel station of the Hamburg subway - U1 in the quarter Eilbek . The station abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "RI". The underground station has an average of around 13,100 boarding and disembarking passengers per day (Mon-Fri, 2017).

construction

The Ritterstraße underground station is located twice below Wandsbeker Chaussee , between Ruckteschellweg in the east and the eponymous Ritterstraße in the west. At both ends of the central platform, stairs lead into vestibules, from which two exits lead to the surface.

The two neighboring stations Wartenau and Wandsbeker Chaussee are each about 800 meters away.

Eastern porch

In the eastern lobby there are only two ticket machines and two entrances: The northern entrance leads to Wandsbeker Chaussee. There are some retail stores here. The southern access leads to the intersection of Wandsbeker Chaussee / Ruckteschellweg.

West porch

There are four entrances in the western vestibule, but they are all to the east of the intersection with Ritterstrasse. In the vestibule is a stainless steel sculpture created in 1959 by the artist Georg Ernst, which shows a group of knights.

history

The Ritterstrasse station went into operation on October 28, 1962, and visitors were able to visit the station for free on the two days before that during the opening ceremony.

In 1987, the facility was extensively renovated and, among other things, today's wall tiles were attached in a striking diamond pattern. In 2007 the station keeper's room was demolished.

There were repeated requests to rename the station, most recently based on the Wandsbek district assembly. Eilbek was proposed as a new name in order to make the district of the same name, in which the stop is located, better known.

Work on the barrier-free expansion began on March 19, 2018 and was completed on August 2, 2019. For this purpose, the route was closed for several weeks in summer 2018. The barrier-free expansion included the installation of two elevators, the elevation of the platform and the establishment of a tactile guidance system for the visually impaired. 3.9 million euros were invested in the expansion.

Transport links

The express bus line 35 (Hamburg Messe - Hauptbahnhof - Wandsbek - Jenfeld - Rahlstedt) is connected at the western end of the Ritterstraße underground station and the city bus line 261 (Barmbek - Wandsbek - Horn - Berliner Tor) stops at Eilbeker Weg. The 608 night bus (St. Pauli - Rathausmarkt - Wandsbek - Rahlstedt) also stops at the express bus stop from Monday to Friday.

There is also a rental station for the Hamburg StadtRAD system at the south-western entrance .
