Rudolf Holbach

Rudolf Holbach (born January 27, 1950 in Nittel ) is a German historian .

Rudolf Holbach studied German and history from 1968 to 1974 at Saarland University and Trier University . In 1974 the academic examination for teaching at grammar schools took place. With Alfred Haverkamp he received his doctorate in 1978 with an investigation into the history of the Trier cathedral chapter in the late Middle Ages. From 1977 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the University of Trier in the field of historical regional studies. In Trier, Holbach was a university assistant from 1985 to 1990. His habilitation took place in 1990 with Franz Irsigler with a study of the early forms of publishing and large-scale production in commercial production from the 13th to the 16th century. In 1990/91 he had a teaching position at the TH Darmstadt . This was followed in 1991/92 by a substitute professor at the University of Bonn for medieval and modern history as well as Rhenish regional history. From 1992 to 1994 he was a university lecturer for economic history in Trier. From 1994 until his retirement in 2016, he taught as a professor of medieval history at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

His main research interests are the economic and social history of the Middle Ages and the early modern period, especially the carriers, forms and relationships of commercial production and trade in a comparative perspective from the 13th to the 16th century. Further focal points are the history of festivals and free time in the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic history and the medieval bishops in exile.
