Franz Irsigler

Franz Irsigler (born September 18, 1941 in Großuretschlag , Krumau district ) is a German historian and professor emeritus for historical regional studies at the University of Trier .

Irsigler attended the humanistic grammar school in Burghausen and Pfarrkirchen and studied history and sociology in Munich and Saarbrücken from 1963 to 1968. In 1968 he received his doctorate in Saarbrücken with the subject of studies on the history of the early Franconian nobility and was then from 1968 to 1974 research assistant at the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland at the University of Bonn . In 1974 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the economic position of the city of Cologne in the 14th and 15th centuries. Structural analysis of a late medieval export and long-distance trade town and received the Venia legendi for Middle and Modern History. In the same year he became Scientific Councilor and Professor at Bielefeld University , where he was also Dean of the Faculty of History from 1975 to 1976. In 1977 he was offered a professorship at the University of Trier, where he had held the Chair of Regional History on April 1, 1977. In Trier he led numerous research projects, including on witch research, the history of money and the art of tombs, and from 1981 to 2008 the Historical Atlas of the Rhineland . From 1987 he was sub-project manager and spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 235 Between the Rhine and the Maas . In 2008 he retired.
