Michel Pauly

Michel Bernard Lucien Pauly (born June 12, 1952 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg historian .

Life

Michel Pauly studied history, Romance studies and political science at the Center Universitaire in Luxembourg and at the University of Tübingen (1971–1977) from 1971 to 1976. He received his doctorate in 1990 from the University of Trier under Franz Irsigler with The City of Luxembourg in the Late Middle Ages . In 1991, the dissertation was awarded the sponsorship prize of the Friends of Trier University. Until 1999 he worked as a high school teacher in Luxembourg. In 1998 he took on a teaching position, since 2002 as assistant professor, at the Center Universitaire , which merged into the University of Luxembourg in 2003. He completed his habilitation in 2005 with the work Hospitals between Maas and Rhine in the Middle Ages at the University of Trier.

Michel Pauly is an expert in medieval history, the history of the hospice system and Luxembourg regional history. In 1972 he founded the journal Forum for Politics, Society and Culture . He is President of the Center Luxembourgeois de Documentation et d'Études Médiévales (CLUDEM), where, among other things, he is responsible for the bibliography on the urban history of Luxembourg . Since 2002 he has been Secretary General of the International Commission for Urban History .

Between 1988 and 2002 Michel Pauly played a key role in the major project of the German Research Foundation Between Maas and Rhine. Relationships, encounters and conflicts in a European core area from late antiquity to the 19th century . In recognition of this and other research in 2006 awarded him the Rhineland Regional Council the Rhineland dollars .
