José Gonçalves da Costa CSsR (born April 27, 1914 in Belo Horizonte , † June 19, 2001 ibid) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Niterói .

Life

José Gonçalves da Costa joined the Redemptorist Order , made his profession on August 2, 1933 , and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1938 .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on June 25, 1962 auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Rhodopolis . The Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Jaime de Barros Câmara , donated him episcopal ordination on August 19 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were João Resende Costa SDB , Coadjutor Archbishop of Belo Horizonte , and Alexandre Gonçalves do Amaral , Archbishop of Uberaba .

As a motto he chose AMORIS OFFICIUM PASCEREIN . He participated in the second to fourth session of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 24, 1969 Bishop of Presidente Prudente . On August 19, 1975, the Pope appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Niterói and titular archbishop pro hac vice of Ulcinium . When Antônio de Almeida Moraes Juniors retired on April 19, 1979, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Niterói. On May 9, 1990, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
