José de Aquino Pereira

José de Aquino Pereira (born April 22, 1920 in Andrães , Vila Real , Portugal ; † November 17, 2011 in São José do Rio Preto , state of São Paulo , Brazil ) was a Portuguese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Rio Preto .

Life

José de Aquino Pereira entered the Vila Real seminary in 1931 . In 1938 he moved to the Seminário Central do Ipiranga em São Paulo. The Bishop of São Carlos do Pinhal , Gastão Liberal Pinto , ordained him priestly on December 3, 1944 in the Cathedral of São Carlos . He worked in various offices in the ordinariate.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on January 23, 1958 as the first bishop of the diocese of Dourados established in the previous year in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso . Bishop Ruy Serra of São Carlos do Pinhal donated him episcopal ordination on April 13, 1958 ; Co- consecrators were José Carlos de Aguirre , Bishop of Sorocaba , and Agnelo Rossi , Bishop of Barra do Piraí . The inauguration in his diocese followed on May 26, 1958. His episcopal motto was "Oportet Illum Regnare".

Pope John XXIII appointed him on March 26, 1960 first bishop of Presidente Prudente ; he was introduced to this office on July 2, 1960. As a council father, he took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Rio Preto on May 6, 1968 ; on August 4, 1968 he was introduced to this office. José de Aquino Pereira fundamentally built up the two dioceses, founded seminars for priests, built churches and parish centers and aligned the congregations in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.

On February 26, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died of pneumonia in the Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa de São José do Rio Preto.
