Orani João Cardinal Tempesta OCist , also Dom Orani João Tempesta , (born June 23, 1950 in São José do Rio Pardo , Brazil ) is a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro .

Life

After finishing school in São José do Rio Pardo, Orani Tempesta entered the Cistercian monastery of São Bernardo in his hometown in 1967 and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Istituto Teologico Salesiano Pio IX in São Paulo . On 2 February 1969, he put his religious vows , and received on December 7 in 1974 by the Bishop of São João da Boa Vista , Tomás Vaquero , the ordination .

In 1984 he became the prior of his home monastery after he had already been pastor of the parish of São Roque in São José do Rio Pardo, coordinator for communication and pastoral care in the diocese of São João da Boa Vista and professor at the Coração de Maria seminary .

After his monastery São Bernardo was elevated to an abbey , he became its first abbot in September 1996 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of São José do Rio Preto on February 26, 1997 . The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor José de Aquino Pereira on April 25 of that year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of São João da Boa Vista, Dadeus Grings , and the Bishop of Guarulhos , Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini . In addition, he was from 1999 to 2002 Apostolic Administrator of the Claraval Territorial Abbey , which was dissolved on December 11, 2002 and incorporated into the Diocese of Guaxupé .

On October 13, 2004, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Belém do Pará and he was solemnly inducted into office there on December 8 of the same year. In May 2007 he participated as a delegate at the by Pope Benedict XVI. opened 5th General Assembly of the Latin American Bishops' Conference (CELAM) in Aparecida .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on February 27, 2009; the ceremonial inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on April 19 of the same year. He is also Chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) .

In June 2012, Orani Tempesta was appointed Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Rio de Janeiro of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Archbishop Tempesta hosted the XXVIII in July 2013 . World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro and was able to greet Pope Francis here .

In the solemn consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Madre della Provvidenza a Monte Verde in the college of cardinals .
