Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini

Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini (born May 20, 1936 in São João da Boa Vista , † June 13, 2012 in Guarulhos ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Guarulhos .

Life

Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini entered the minor seminary in 1947 and later studied philosophy, theology and journalism. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1959 . For 32 years he was a priest in São João da Boa Vista and pastor of the cathedral, vicar general of the diocese, member of the council of elders and vice- rector of the diocesan seminary .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Guarulhos on December 4, 1991 . The old bishop of São João da Boa Vista , Tomás Vaquero , donated him episcopal ordination on February 7th of the following year ; Co- consecrators were David Picão , Bishop of Santos , and Dadeus Grings , Bishop of São João da Boa Vista. On November 23, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation put forward by Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini for reasons of age.

Act

Bergonzini was a staunch opponent of abortions and prenatal diagnostics and was always in the public eye. In the blog DOM LUIZ BERGONZINI he responded to the “decriminalization of society”.

In 2010 he was voted one of the 100 most important Brazilians by Epoca magazine . In 1996 he became an honorary citizen of Guarulhos. In 2011 he received the Prêmio Von Gallen , a prize for commitment to the rights of life.

Luiz Gonzaga Bergonzini was also active as a journalist and editor-in-chief of the magazine A Cidade de São João and the diocesan newspaper of Guarulhos. Among other things, he was a member of the Academy of Arts of São João, professor of economics at the Universidad Em São João Da Boa Vista, superintendent of the Stella Maris hospital and vice-president of the Irmandade Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Guarulhos .
