David Picão

David Picão (born August 18, 1923 in Ribeirão Preto , São Paulo , Brazil , † April 30, 2009 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Santos .

Life

David Picão studied theology and philosophy at the seminars in Campinas and Central do Ipiranga, as well as theology and canon law at the Gregoriana in Rome. He was ordained a priest on October 10, 1948 in Rome. He then worked in the Archdiocese of Ribeirão Preto , as professor and spiritual director of the diocesan seminary “Maria Immaculata”, and later as chancellor of the archbishopric administration.

On May 14, 1960 he was by Pope John XXIII. appointed first bishop of the newly established diocese of São João da Boa Vista . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Armando Lombardi , Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, on July 31, 1960 in the Cathedral of Ribeirão Preto; Co- consecrators were Luis do Amaral Mousinho , Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto, and Jaime Luiz Coelho , Bishop of Maringá . His episcopal motto was "Omnibus omnia factus" ("Everything for everyone" - 1 Corinthians 9.22  EU ).

John XXIII appointed him on May 10, 1963 titular bishop of Thois and coadjutor bishop of Santos . The inauguration took place on June 22 of the same year.

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

With the resignation of Idílio José Soares on November 21, 1966, he succeeded him as the fourth bishop of Santos.

David Picão was Chancellor of the Universidade Católica de Santos (UniSantos) for over 35 years . He has received numerous honors and awards, including in 1996 the honorary citizenship of Santos .

On July 26, 2000, his age-related resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II .
