Joaquim Justino Carreira (born January 29, 1950 in Santa Catarina da Serra , Portugal ; † September 1, 2013 in São Paulo , Brazil ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Guarulhos in Brazil.

Life

After graduating from the Colégio São Bento in Araraquara, São Paulo, Joaquim Justino Carreira was initially an office assistant (1963–1967) and from 1967 to 1973 secretary at the diocesan curia in Jundiaí . He studied philosophy at the Faculdades Anchieta in São Paulo and from 1973 to 1976 theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . At the Faculdade Nossa Sra Assunção in São Paulo he completed a degree in pastoral theology. He completed a master's degree in marriage and family at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.

He was ordained deacon in the diocese of Jundiaí on June 11, 1976 . The Bishop of Jundiaí, Gabriel Paulino Bueno Couto OCarm , ordained him as a priest on March 19, 1977 in Jundiaí . From 1976 to 2005 he was active in pastoral care, most recently pastor of the cathedral Nossa Senhora do Desterro in Jundiaí. Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Papal Honorary Chaplain ( Monsignor ) on August 6, 1990 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop in São Paulo and Titular Bishop of Cabarsussi on March 24, 2005 . The Archbishop of São Paulo, Cláudio Cardinal Hummes OFM , donated him episcopal ordination on May 21 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Osvaldo Giuntini , Bishop of Marília , and Gil Antônio Moreira , Bishop of Jundiaí. He chose PAX VOBIS as his motto .

In 2011 he became a member of the Pastoral Commission of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB). He was Vicar of Pastoral Regions VI, VII and VIII and Vicar General of the Diocese of Jundiaí.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Guarulhos on November 23, 2011 .

In 2012 Carreira was diagnosed with cancer, which is why he underwent chemotherapy from February to August 2013. On August 24, 2013, he was brought to the intensive care unit of AC Camargo Hospital because of complications, where he died of cancer on September 1.
