The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Paulo ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Pauli in Brasilia , Portuguese Arquidiocese de São Paulo ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in the Brazilian Sao Paulo in the state of São Paulo .

history

The diocese of São Paulo was founded by Pope Benedict XIV with the Latin name Sancti Pauli in Brasilia on December 6, 1745 from the metropolitan diocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . The first bishop was Bernardo Rodrigues Nogueira . On June 7, 1908, the diocese was raised to an archbishopric by Pope Pius X. Leopoldo Duarte e Silva became the first archbishop .

Numerous suffragan dioceses were founded between 1892 and 1989 .
