Leopoldo Duarte e Silva (born April 4, 1867 in Taubaté , † November 13, 1938 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Paulo .

Life

Leopoldo Duarte e Silva, whose parents were immigrants from Portugal , enrolled in the São Paulo seminary in 1887 . On October 30, 1892 he was ordained a priest by Lino Deodato Rodrigues de Carvalho , the then bishop of São Paulo. He then worked as the first parish priest of Santa Cecília . He was involved in the establishment of the parish of Lapa e Água Branca and later received the title of Pontifical House Prelate ( Monsignor ).

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Curitiba on May 10, 1904 . He was ordained episcopate on May 22nd of the same year by Cardinal Secretary of State Rafael Merry del Val . Co- consecrators were Silvério Gomes Pimenta , Bishop of Mariana , and the Bishop Emeritus of Gubbio , Luigi Lazzareschi . The enthronement took place on October 2, 1904.

After two years of service, Pius X appointed him Bishop of São Paulo on December 18, 1906. On June 7, 1908, the Pope elevated this diocese to an archbishopric , making Leopoldo Duarte e Silva the first archbishop of São Paulo. On June 29, 1913, he laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new cathedral . In 1915 he opened and led the first Eucharistic Congress in his archbishopric. In São Paulo he also organized a national Eucharistic Congress in 1922 and the Congress of Catholic Youth in 1928.
