Odilo Pedro Cardinal Scherer , also Dom Odilo , (born September 21, 1949 in Cerro Largo (Rio Grande do Sul) , Brazil as Otto Scherer ) is a Brazilian clergyman and acting Archbishop of São Paulo , the third largest diocese with 5.2 million Catholics of the world.

The German-Brazilian Odilo Pedro Scherer was born as one of eleven children of Edwino Scherer and his wife Francisca. Steffens was born. His ancestors emigrated from Theley in the Saarland in the 1880s .

Scherer is a nephew of Cardinal Alfredo Vicente Scherer .

Life

Initial and continuing education

Scherer studied from 1963 to 1969 Catholic theology and philosophy at the Seminary Seminário São José in Curitiba . At the Seminário Maior Rainha dos Apóstolos in Curitiba he deepened his philosophical studies and studied from 1970 to 1975 educational sciences at the Universidade de Passo Fundo in Passo Fundo . On December 7, 1976, he received the sacrament of ordination through Archbishop Armando Círio in Quatro Pontes . After completing a postgraduate course in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Curitiba, he completed a master's degree in philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1994 to 1996 . As a seminarian at the Pontifical Brazilian Pius College , he graduated from 1988 to 1991 a PhD for Doctor of theology at the Gregorian Roman.

He completed various advanced training courses, such as didactic methodology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre , the German language at the Goethe Institute in Staufen im Breisgau , the French language at the University of Lyon and the English language in London .

From 1983 to 1985 he worked together with Zeno Hastenteufel and Jacinto Bergmann as a student in Rome for a time as a holiday replacement in the parish of the Transfiguration of Christ in Bad Vilbel .

University professor

Odilo Scherer was rector and professor at the seminary Seminário Diocesano São José in Cascavel (1977–1978), at the diocesan seminary Seminário Diocesano Maria Mãe da Igreja in Toledo (1979–1982, 1993) and at the Centro Interdiocesano de Teologia de Cascavel (Cintec) (1991) -1993).

Before Scherer worked as a pastor in Toledo from 1985 to 1988 , he taught philosophy at the Faculdade de Ciências Humanas Arnaldo Busatto (1980–1985) and Catholic theology at the Instituto de Filosofia e Teologia Paulo VI (IFITEPS) (1985). He then taught at the Universidade Federal do Paraná until 1994 . From 1994 to 2001 Odilo Pedro Scherer was an official in the Congregation for Bishops .

Auxiliary Bishop in São Paulo (2002-2007)

Archbishop of São Paulo

On March 21, 2007 Odilo Pedro Scherer was by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Archbishop of São Paulo . The enthronement took place on April 29, 2007. As Archbishop of São Paulo, he is Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo ( PUC-SP ), one of the largest universities in Brazil.

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Andrea al Quirinale in the college of cardinals .

Cardinal Odilo Scherer, together with the Archbishop of Bombay , Oswald Cardinal Gracias , and the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , William Joseph Cardinal Levada, was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as delegate president of the 12th Synod of Bishops (October 5th to 26th, 2008).

For the local elections in São Paulo in 2012, Scherer, as Archbishop of São Paulo, together with his auxiliary bishops published a 10-point guideline for elections (“ Nota orientando para voto consciente ” (German: “Guideline for the conscious voice”)).

Scherer deplores a culture that is developing worldwide without solid, consistent values, full of subjectivism and total value relativism, especially with regard to ethical, anthropological and religious values. He speaks of a “culture of total subjectivism”.

He advocates an “economy in community” based on Catholic social teaching .

In February 2008 Benedict XVI called Scherer joined the cardinal supervisory body of the Vatican Bank Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR), which is in a serious crisis due to money laundering in the service of the Mafia, blocking of corruption investigations, bribery affairs and secret numbered accounts.

In addition to his native Portuguese , Scherer speaks fluent English , Italian and German .

After Pope Benedict XVI's announcement of his resignation. he was traded as papabile .
