Sant'Andrea al Quirinale ( Latin Sancti Andreae in Quirinali ) is a church in Rome . It is located on the Quirinal and was carried out by Bernini's assistant from 1658–1670 according to plans by Bernini . The client was Cardinal Camillo Pamphilj , nephew of Pope Innocent X .

The church was consecrated in 1678 and has the patronage of St. Andrew . It is the title church of Odilo Pedro Cardinal Scherer and the rectorate church of the parish of San Vitale .

History and structure

Since the construction site for the Jesuit church , which is consecrated to the Apostle Andrew , was wide but not deep, Bernini chose an oval as the floor plan , which should lead the viewer's gaze in a semicircle to the altar niche opposite the portal . For this purpose, Bernini made use of a combination of various artistic elements that, when combined, form an impressive ensemble. So he visually connected the altarpiece , the sculpture of Andrew and the lantern of the church, which shows the Holy Spirit, through looks and movements: Saint Andrew hanging on the cross looks up to his own stucco version , which ascends skyward.

The church interior, decorated with pink marble, is structured by fluted pilasters in the Corinthian style , angels and putti in stucco decorate the skylights of the church interior.

In 1568, 19-year-old St. Stanislaus Kostka , who was a novice of the order, died in the neighboring Jesuit monastery . A marble monument by Pierre Legros commemorates the saint.

The church served in the years 1870-1946 as the court church of the Italian royal family; it is currently one of the preferred wedding churches.
