Adam Cardinal Kozłowiecki SJ (born April 1, 1911 in Huta Komorowska near Rzeszów , Poland , † September 28, 2007 in Lusaka , Zambia ) was Archbishop of Lusaka .

Life

Adam Kozłowiecki entered the Jesuit order after finishing school and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . In 1937 he received the sacrament of ordination . In November 1939, he and 24 other Jesuits were arrested by the Gestapo in Krakow . Until February 1940 she was imprisoned in Wiśnicz prison, then deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp . In June 1940 he was "transferred" to the Dachau concentration camp . He remained in the local pastor's block until the end of the Second World War.

After liberation, he sent his religious superior as a chaplain in the operated by Polish Jesuit mission in Northern Rhodesia , where he worked as a teacher and a priest until the 1950s.

On June 4, 1955 Adam Kozłowiecki was from Pope Pius XII. Appointed Titular Bishop of Diospolis Inferior and Apostolic Vicar of the newly established Apostolic Vicariate in Lusaka (then: Northern Rhodesia). On September 11 of the same year Kozłowiecki received the episcopal ordination by the then Apostolic Envoy for British East Africa , James Robert Knox . From then on he headed the Apostolic Vicariate as pastor.

In 1959 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of Lusaka. In 1969 he resigned from this office to clear the way for a local bishop and was appointed titular archbishop of Potentia in Piceno . He found a new place of work as a missionary in Zambia. From 1970 to 1991 he was a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . Pope John Paul II accepted Adam Kozłowiecki in 1998 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale in the college of cardinals .
