Manfred Deselaers

Manfred Deselaers (born May 19, 1955 in Düsseldorf ) is a German Catholic priest .

Life and education

After graduating from high school in 1974, Deselaers first studied law for one semester in Bonn . He then went to Israel for a year and a half with the Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste, among others with Martin H. Jung . He took a language course at Kibbutz Dovrat. He then worked in a home for handicapped children in Jerusalem . He then studied theology in Tübingen from 1976 to 1981 and in Chicago from 1978 to 1979. In 1983 he was ordained a priest in Aachen. From 1991 to 1996 he did his doctorate at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Cracow . The title of his dissertation was: God and Evil with regard to the biography and self-testimonies of Rudolf Höß , the commandant of Auschwitz . In 1994 he received training as a tour guide at the State Memorial in Auschwitz-Birkenau . In 1998 he completed his training as a Holocaust Educator at the International School of Holocaust Studies, Yad Vashem , Jerusalem.

At first he was a chaplain in Mönchengladbach . Here he also began to get involved in the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation . In 1989 he went to Poland as part of the German-Polish reconciliation and first learned the Polish language at the Catholic University of Lublin . Since 1990 he has lived in the parish of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt in the city of Oświęcim (Auschwitz). There he dedicates himself to the German-Polish and Christian-Jewish reconciliation work. Since 2008 he has been vice-president of the Cracow foundation Centrum Dialogu i Modlitwy (= Center for Dialogue and Prayer in Oświęcim).

Reconciliation pilgrimage to Russia

In autumn 2017 Manfred Deselaers went on a pilgrimage to Russia for reconciliation.
