The Pontifical University of John Paul II , ( Polish : Uniwersytet Papieski Jana Pawła II ; abbreviation UPJPII ) is a papal university in Krakow .

history

The forerunner of the Pontifical University of John Paul II was the theological faculty of the Jagiellonian University, which had been in existence since 1364, and was founded in 1400 . With the Motu proprio Beata Hedvigis this was converted by Pope John Paul II in 1981 into the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow . In February 2010 this was by Pope Benedict XVI. elevated to the Pontifical University of John Paul II .

The university offers bachelor , master and doctoral degree courses as well as habilitation opportunities . She teaches and researches in the faculties of Catholic theology , philosophy , history and cultural heritage , and social sciences . The Theological Faculty in Tarnów and the Interfaculty Institutes for Bioethics and Ecumenism and Dialogue are assigned to it .

The John Paul II University is a member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIUC) and the European Federation of Catholic Universities (FUCE), the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities (KRUP) and the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP ).

Partner universities are the Ruhr University Bochum , the Catholic Péter Pázmány University in Budapest, the University of Graz , the University of Prešov and the Catholic University of Ružomberok .

The University's Grand Chancellor is the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz .
