Wacław Świerzawski

Wacław Józef Świerzawski (born May 14, 1927 in Zolochiv ; † October 7, 2017 in Zawichost ) was a Polish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Sandomierz .

Life

Wacław Świerzawski studied theology and philosophy at the Great Seminary in Lviv. The Archbishop of Lviv , Eugeniusz Baziak , ordained him on December 11, 1949 as a priest of the Zamość-Lubaczów diocese . In 1950 he graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Jagiellonian University. From 1952 to 1954 he studied canon law at Warsaw University. From 1964 to 1968 he studied at the Liturgical Institute of the Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo in Rome, where he received his doctorate in 1968. In 1975 he completed his habilitation at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Krakow. In 1981 he was appointed associate professor and in 1989 professor of theology. From 1988 to 1992 he was rector of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Sandomierz on March 25, 1992. The Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk , donated him episcopal consecration on April 28 of the same year . Co- consecrators were Ignacy Tokarczuk , Archbishop of Przemyśl , Bolesław Pylak , Archbishop of Lublin , and Marian Jaworski , Archbishop of Lemberg. His motto was "Apostolus Iesu Christi" (Apostle of Jesus Christ).

On October 7, 2002 - 15 years before the bishop's death - Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He has authored books, scholarly and popular science articles on the theology of liturgy and spirituality. He was a member of various scientific societies in Poland and abroad.

In 2007 he received the honorary award "Bene meritus" from the mayor of Sandomierz.
