Ignacy Tokarczuk (born February 1, 1918 in Lubianki , Poland , † December 29, 2012 in Przemyśl ) was Archbishop of Przemyśl .

Life

Ignacy Tokarczuk studied philosophy at the seminary in Lviv and Catholic Theology at the John Casimir University . During the Second World War he continued his studies underground. On 21 June 1942 he became Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak for priests ordained. He was vicar in Złotniki, and from 1945 worked in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Katowice and at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice . After an announced death sentence against him by the Ukrainian insurgent army , he fled to Lemberg and worked there as a vicar from spring 1947 to 1950. He received his doctorate in philosophy from the Catholic University of Lublin and from 1952 worked in the pastoral care of Warmia and as a professor of philosophy and theology at the seminary in Olsztyn .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 3, 1965 Bishop of Przemyśl. He was ordained bishop on February 6, 1966 in the Przemyśl Cathedral by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński ; Co- consecrators were Wojciech Tomaka , auxiliary bishop emeritus in Przemyśl, and Stanislaw Jakiel , auxiliary bishop in Przemyśl. His episcopal motto was Deus Caritas est .

Pope John Paul II elevated him with the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus to Archbishop of Przemyśl, as well as Metropolitan of the Church Province of Przemyśl. On April 17, 1993, John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.

Tokarczuk was known as "biskup niezłomny", the indomitable bishop . Despite the lack of permits from the communist authorities, he had over 400 churches and chapels built and became involved against the regime. He was repeatedly harassed by the authorities for this reason.

He has been honored several times for his commitment, including the Order of the White Eagle , the highest decoration of the Third Republic of Poland . He was an honorary citizen of Rzeszów and Przemyśl . He held honorary doctorates from the universities in Lublin and Rzeszów.
