history

The first cathedral since the diocese was founded in 1375 was a wooden church consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul until 1412 and stood in the square next to today's Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. From 1412 to 1460 a stone-built Ruthenian cathedral stood in the courtyard of Przemyśl Castle.

The construction of today's cathedral in Gothic style began in 1495 under Bishop Mikołaj Błażejowski. Only the walls and pillars remained. The new construction, along with the interior furnishings, would be completed in the first decades of the 16th century. In 1578, the Starost of Przemyśl, Jan Tomasz Drohojowski, financed the current Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Due to the constant threat of the Tatar and Wallachian invasions , the church was fortified, walled and equipped with cannons. The work lasted from 1460 to 1571 in total.

Under the choir there are foundations of the late Romanesque stone rotunda from the first half of the 13th century. The cathedral survived the wars of the 17th century, the Gothic cathedral served the Bishops of Przemyśl until the beginning of the 18th century. Bishop Aleksander Antoni Fredro decided to renovate the building in the baroque style . This work was carried out from 1724. The choir received a huge baroque altar and two chapels with their own domes were created. In 1733 the vault collapsed and partially destroyed the furnishings of the church and the crypt. The church was rebuilt by 1744. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries it was rebuilt again, whereby the oldest parts of the church were given a Gothic character again.

The cathedral was given in 1960 by Pope John XXIII. additionally awarded the status of a minor basilica. In 2014, crypts under the church were opened to the public. The most valuable element of the underground are the outer walls of the Romanesque rotunda of St. Nicholas, probably from 1215, consisting of a circular nave and horseshoe apses. The bell tower, which stands next to the church for the residents of Przemyśl, often serves as a landmark.
