The Archdiocese of Przemyśl ( Latin Archidioecesis Premisliensis Latinorum , Polish Archidiecezja przemyska ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in southeastern Poland with its seat in the city of Przemyśl . The patron saint of the diocese is Saint Valentine .
history
After King Casimir the Great of Poland subjugated the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia after 1340, the first bishops of Przemyśl were appointed, but the organization was still in a nappy state until the arrival of Erik von Winsen in 1379. Besides, that happened after Kasimir the Great's death under King Louis of Poland and Hungary († 1382), who at that time sought the establishment of a separate state in Red Ruthenia that was dependent on the House of Anjou . Before the establishment of the ecclesiastical province in Halych year 1375 (1412 was Lviv to the seat), there were about 20 Roman Catholic churches and three monasteries. The borders coincided with the borders of the Peremyschl eparchy (roughly Przemyśler and Sanoker Land ), but the eastern border, which was disputed with the Halych bishop, was only clarified shortly before the death of Bishop Erik. At that time the number of Roman Catholic churches and parishes reached around 40, then 140 (1500), 153 (1640), 162 (1742) and 177 (1772). In the second half of the 16th century, the diocese temporarily lost up to 30 churches (of around 150) due to the Reformation .
The first major border changes were introduced after the partition of Poland due to the new Tarnów diocese . With 23,570 km² the diocese was the second largest in Galicia (out of 4), but with 885,062 (1880) Roman Catholics the most populous. By 1914 that number rose to 1,181,569. Before the Second World War, the diocese was around 21,000 square kilometers and had over 1,100,000 Latin Catholics (52.9% of the population, dominating in the west and north). In 1945 the diocese was divided between Poland (2/3) and the Soviet Union (1/3; 74 parishes).
With the re-establishment of the diocese of Rzeszów on the former territory of the dioceses of Przemyśl and Tarnów , the diocese was raised on March 25, 1992 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus to the archbishopric and metropolitan seat with the Suffragan dioceses Rzeszów and Zamość-Lubaczów.
In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (1861-1918), the Bishop of Przemyśl had a virile vote in the Galician Parliament .
