Józef Michalik (born April 20, 1941 in Zambrów , Poland ) is a Polish clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Przemyśl and former chairman of the Polish Bishops' Conference .

Life

Michalik studied Catholic theology in the seminary of Lomza . On May 23, 1964 he was ordained a priest by Czeslaw Falkowski , Bishop of Łomża . He studied dogmatic theology at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome , where he in 1972 to Dr. theol. received his doctorate . In 1973 he became Vice-Chancellor of the Diocesan Curia in Łomża. In October 1985 he became head of the youth department of the Pontifical Council for the Laity in Rome. Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on February 27, 1979 .

On October 1, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Landsberg and on October 16, 1986 he himself donated his episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were Eduardo Francisco Cardinal Pironio , President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity , and Henryk Roman Cardinal Gulbinowicz , Archbishop of Wroclaw. On April 17, 1993 he was appointed Archbishop of Przemyśl .

Since 1990 he has been a consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Laity and a member of the Congregation for Bishops . In 1999 Michalik became vice-chairman of the Polish Bishops' Conference and in 2004 chairman; he succeeded Cardinal Józef Glemp . On March 10, 2009, he was re-elected as chairman for a further five-year term. Since September 30, 2011 he has been Vice-President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences CCEE .

On April 30, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.

Act

In 2005 Michalik worked with Cardinal Karl Lehmann on the joint declaration of the German and Polish Bishops' Conference on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the 1965 correspondence . This built on the historical correspondence between the two Bishops' Conferences since 1965 .

In 2002 he received the Polonia Mater Nostra Est medal . Josef Michalik is an honorary member of the Catholic student association KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau in the CV .

In the dispute over the Polish constitutional court, he supported the right-wing conservative ruling party "Law and Justice" and sharply criticized the opposition.

criticism

In 2013 he said that children or their families were to blame if they were sexually abused. After protests, he apologized for this statement.
