history

As the diocese of Wigry on March 25, 1798 by Pope Pius VI. erected, it was renamed Sejny / Augustów by papal decree of June 30, 1818.

On October 28, 1925, on the basis of the state treaty concluded with the Soviet Union ( Peace Treaty of Riga ) on March 18, 1921, Sejny was dissolved and the diocese of Łomża was newly created.

In January 2009 Sejny was reactivated as a titular bishopric , whose first titular archbishop was Jan Romeo Pawłowski , Apostolic Nuncio of the Republic of the Congo and Gabon on March 18, 2009 . On December 13, 2014, the original Wigry bishopric was also given to the Katowice auxiliary bishop Marek Szkudło as the titular seat .
