Krasnosielc is a village in the powiat Makowski in the Masovian Voivodeship , Poland . The village is also the seat of the rural community of the same name (Gmina wiejska) .

geography

Krasnosielc is located about 90 km north of Warsaw and 18 km east of Przasnysz on the Orzyc . Droga wojewódzka 544 runs through the place. Krasnosielz is located 25 km northwest of the city of Różan .

history

The village already existed in 1374. The first written mention comes from Henryka Holta from 1413 in a report on the border disputes between Mazovia and the Teutonic Order . He names the place as Siedlce . In old sources the place is called Sielc or Siedlec. Later the addition Krasno was added, derived from the name of the Krasiński family . In 1824 the place received city rights. It lost it in 1869 as a result of the January uprising . From 1873 or 1874 there was a public school in Krasnosielc; first the language of instruction was Russian, then from 1905 Polish. In 1881 there was a famine as a result of a drought and in 1893/94 there was a cholera epidemic . In 1900 the first library was set up in town. At the end of the 19th century there was also a Jewish primary school and a Jewish library in the village. 1905/06 there were also unrest and strikes against the Tsar in and around Krasnosielc. The first voluntary fire brigade in Krasnosielc was also established in 1906 . In 1910 the place had 2782 inhabitants; after the First World War it was only 1842. The front at times ran along the Orzyc River .

Krasnosielc was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from 1939 to 1945 and was the site of a mass murder of Polish Jews as early as the first week of September 1939. After the occupation of the site, around 50 Jewish men were called in to carry out repairs on the bridge over the Orzyc. On the evening of the day, September 5, 1939, these 50 men were shot in the local synagogue by some members of the SS artillery regiment belonging to the Kempf Panzer Division with a machine gun placed in front of the door . The dead were buried in a mass grave next to the synagogue. This was one of the first mass murders of Polish Jews by SS and Wehrmacht soldiers to become known to the higher Wehrmacht and SS leadership in Berlin. The two main culprits, an SS storm husband and a police sergeant of the military police were in front of a military - military court found the division. The storm man was sentenced to 3 years in prison and the police sergeant to 9 years in prison. A short time later, the judgments were considerably toned down. The remaining Jews were expelled from Krasnosielc on September 28, 1939 and went to Różan and Ostrów , some also to Maków , Ciechanów and Białystok .

From 1975 to 1998 the village belonged to the Ostrołęka Voivodeship .
