Wyszków [ ˈvɨʂkuf ] ( German 1941–1945 Hohenburg ) is the district town of the Powiat Wyszkowski in the Masovian Voivodeship with around 27,000 inhabitants today. The city is located on the Bug , about 55 km northeast of Warsaw .
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1203, and in 1502 it received city rights. In the Second Northern War from 1655 to 1660, the city was destroyed and lost its importance for the region.
The construction of the Pilawa – Tłuszcz – Ostrołęka railway in 1897 accelerated industrialization . Before the Second World War , around 5,000 Jews lived in Wyszkóws. On September 14, 1997, a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust was unveiled in Wyszków. It was built from Jewish gravestones that the Germans had used as building material after the conquest of Poland in 1939. From 1975 to 1998 Wyszków belonged to the Ostrołęka Voivodeship and before that to the Warsaw Voivodeship .
