The Archdiocese of Katowice ( Latin: Archidioecesis Katovicensis , Polish : Archidiecezja katowicka ) extends over the eastern part of Upper Silesia in Poland .

history

After Eastern Upper Silesia (the region around Katowice ) was annexed to Poland on June 20, 1922, the Catholic parishes in this area and those in the Polish part of Cieszyn Silesia , which had previously belonged to Austria-Hungary, left the diocese on November 7, 1922 Wroclaw from. First, on December 17, 1922, an apostolic administration subordinate to the Pope was set up, whereupon on October 28, 1925 with the Bull Vixdum Poloniae Unitas of Pope Pius XI. the establishment of the diocese of Katowice was completed. At the same time, the first Bishop August Hlond took office in the newly founded diocese , which was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Krakow as a suffragan .

On March 25, 1992 the diocese was raised to the status of an archdiocese as part of the reform of the Polish dioceses . The basis for the reform was the Apostolic Constitution of Pope John Paul II , Totus tuus Poloniae populus . Since then, the new Archdiocese of Katowice has formed a church province to which the dioceses of Gliwice and Opole are assigned as suffragan dioceses . The ecclesiastical province of Katowice covers the entire historical Upper Silesia . The archbishopric is inhabited by 1.7 million people and the archbishop or metropolitan is Wiktor Skworc . The main church of the diocese is the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice.

A partnership with the diocese of Essen has existed since 1993 .
