Damian Zimoń (born October 25, 1934 in Niedobczyce , Poland ) was Bishop / Archbishop of Katowice from 1985 to 2011 .

Life

After entering the Archbishop's Seminary in Cracow and studying Catholic theology , Damian Zimoń received the sacrament of ordination on December 21, 1957 . He was then a chaplain in Tychy and later in Pszów and Kattowitz . From 1969 to 1975 he was Subregens at the Cracow seminary and then to provost at the parish of St. Mary in Katowice. From 1970 to 1977 he also completed a postgraduate course in pastoral theology at the Catholic University of Lublin and in historical liturgical studies at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Cracow.

June 3, 1985 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the Bishop of Katowice. The episcopal ordination received his Jozef Cardinal Glemp on 29 November of the same year in the Christ the King Cathedral Katowice .

His episcopal motto Praedicamus crucifixum ("We proclaim [Christ] the crucified") comes from the 1st Corinthians ( 1 Cor 1.23  EU ).

After the restructuring of the Catholic Church in Poland through the Apostolic Constitution Totus tuus Poloniae populus of March 25, 1992 issued by John Paul II and the associated elevation of the diocese of Katowice to the archdiocese , Damian Zimoń became the first archbishop of Katowice and thus the first metropolitan of the newly created church province of the same name .

On October 29, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. Damian Zimoń resigned and relieved him of his office as Archbishop of Katowice for reasons of age.
