Herbert Bednorz

Herbert Bednorz (born September 22, 1908 in Gliwice , † April 12, 1989 in Katowice , Poland ) was Bishop of Katowice .

Life

The second child (seven siblings) of Joseph Bednorz and Anna, born Ruda, attended elementary school and grammar school in Gliwice. In 1922 the family moved to Katowice. After graduating from high school in 1927, he entered the seminary in Cracow and studied theology at the Jagiellonian University there . On 26 June 1932 he became Bishop Stanislaw Adamski for priests ordained. He studied social sciences abroad at the Catholic University of Leuven and economics at the Sorbonne in Paris . He dealt with the social teaching of the reformers Luther and Calvin .

On May 4, 1950 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed coadjutor with the right of succession to Bishop Stanisław Adamski, who is in poor health, in the diocese of Katowice; at the same time he received the titular bishopric Bulla Regia as titular bishop . He received the episcopal ordination on December 24, 1950 from Diocesan Bishop Stanislaw Adamski; Co- consecrators were the bishop of Częstochowa Teodor Kubina and the auxiliary bishop in Katowice Juliusz Bieniek .

His episcopal motto was: "Pax hominibus bonae voluntatis" ("Peace on earth to the people of his grace") from the Gloria of Holy Mass .

Arrested and interrogated by the secret police in 1952 , he was removed from office with other bishops and expelled from the diocese. He found shelter with the Sisters of Mary in Posen . In 1956 he returned to Katowice. He was a participant of the Second Vatican Council and in the last session a member of the Committee for the Laity. After the death of Bishop Adamski on November 12, 1967, he became Bishop of Katowice.

At the age of 75, he offered Pope John Paul II his age-related resignation on April 23, 1985 , which the Pope accepted on June 3, 1985 with the appointment of his successor Damian Zimoń .

He found his final resting place in the crypt of Christ the King's Cathedral in Katowice.
