The diocese of Toruń ( Latin : Dioecesis Thoruniensis , Polish : Diecezja toruńska ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Poland . It belongs to the church province of Danzig .

history

Toruń is one of the youngest Polish dioceses. It was founded during the restructuring of the Catholic Church in Poland in 1992 ( Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus of March 25) from areas of the Archdiocese of Gniezno and the Diocese of Kulm (now Pelplin). The previous Płocker Auxiliary Bishop Andrzej Wojciech Suski was appointed the first Bishop of Thorn. The Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, a minor basilica since 1935 , was elevated to a cathedral in 1992 . The Trinity Church in Kulmsee has been a co-cathedral since 1994 .

coat of arms

The four-part coat of arms of the diocese of Toruń shows in field 1 on a blue background the Lamb of God as a symbol of John the Baptist, field 2 on a red background the eagle as a symbol of John (Evangelist), the two Johns are the patrons of the Cathedral of Toruń , field 3 white / silver background an anchor, the coat of arms of the first bishop Andrzej Wojciech Suski, field 4 on a yellow background an M as a symbol for Mary (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) .
