The Diocese of Tarnów ( Latin: Dioecesis Tarnoviensis , Polish: Diecezja tarnowska ) is a Polish diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Tarnów in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . It has belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Krakow since 1992 as a suffragan .

history

After the first partition of Poland in 1772, the southern part of the Krakow diocese fell to Austria. At the suggestion of Emperor Joseph II , the Galician diocese of Tarnow was founded in 1783 and the previous vicar general Jan Duvall was appointed bishop. In the agreement with the Holy See Suprema Petri beati cathedra it was made by Pope Pius VI. confirmed and canonically established on March 13, 1786. The first incumbent bishop was Florian Amand Janowski , previously abbot of Tyniec Abbey , since the appointed bishop died in December 1785. The abbey was also the seat of a bishopric from 1821 to 1836. On June 13, 1805 the area of the diocese came to the diocese of Kielce .

On September 20, 1821, the diocese was re-established as the Tyniec diocese from areas of the Kraków and Przemyśl dioceses and renamed the Tarnow diocese on April 23, 1826 .

In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (1861-1918), the Bishop of Tarnow had a virile vote in the Galician state parliament .
