Florian Amand Janowski OSB (born April 28, 1725 in Masłomiąca near Michałowice, Lesser Poland ; † January 4, 1801 in Tarnów ) was Bishop of Tarnów .

Life

Florian Janowski, of noble descent, studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . In 1745 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Tyniec , when he was professed in 1746, he was given the religious name Amand. He studied theology in the monastery and was ordained a religious priest on March 16, 1749 . He received his doctorate in theology and in 1749 became professor of philosophy and dogmatics at the abbey. First cellerar , then secretary, he became abbot in Tyniec on his return from Rome in 1762 . He gained authority and trust among the monks and was able to influence other Benedictine settlements in Poland.

Janowski participated in the negotiations that led to the establishment of the Diocese of Tarnów, so that Emperor Joseph II appointed him first bishop on December 24, 1785. With the canonical establishment of the Diocese of Tarnów on March 13, 1786 by Pius VI. the Pope also confirmed the new bishop on April 3, 1786. It was consecrated on August 13, 1786 by the Archbishop of Lemberg , Ferdynand Onufry Kicki . It was installed in the Tarnów diocese on September 24, 1786.

Janowski bequeathed his fortune to the Diocese of Tarnów in a will. He was buried in the Old Cemetery in Tarnów.
