The Tarnów Cathedral or officially the Cathedral Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary ( Polish: Bazylika katedralna Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny ) is a Roman Catholic church in Tarnów in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland . The Cathedral of the Diocese of Tarnów is consecrated to the Mother of God under the Invocation of the Birth of Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church is first documented in 1346. In 1400 the church became a collegiate church . In the following centuries it was laterally extended, the tower was dismantled at roof level in 1810 and rebuilt in 1880, the original height is not known. As part of the Habsburg Empire in 1768 with the creation of the diocese, the church was elevated to the status of a cathedral, after its temporary dissolution in 1805 again since 1821. In the years 1889 to 1900, the cathedral was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style during a thorough renovation . In 1972 the church was given by Pope John XXIII. the title of minor basilica and was visited in 1987 by Pope John Paul II . In 1980 the church was placed under a preservation order.

architecture

The brick church was originally built as a single-nave building. It has a rectangular, lower choir with a three-sided apse and a square west tower. The Gothic church has been repeatedly redesigned over the centuries and supplemented with chapels. After a fire in 1494, the church tower, which is 72 meters high today, was built. At the time of Bishop Gregor Thomas Ziegler , the chapels were connected on both sides with arcades to form side aisles, making the cathedral three aisles. The southern aisle was extended to the choir with the Benedict Chapel, today's Chapel of the Holy Sacrament. On the north side of the church are the sacristy and a treasury.

Furnishing

Tomb of Barbara Tarnowska

The particularity of the church furnishings are the Renaissance and Baroque grave monuments of the Tarnowski and Ostrogski families, which were created by the foreign sculptors Bartolomeo Berrecci , Giovanni Maria Mosca and Johann Pfister . The grave monument of Barbara Tarnowska was created by Berrecci and is one of the most beautiful Renaissance grave monuments in Europe for a woman. Equally significant are the grave monuments of Hetman Jan Tarnowski and his son Krzysztof with a height of 13.8 meters and a width of 5.6 meters. The rich interior of the cathedral also includes Gothic winged altars with their magnificent backs, the sculptures, epitaphs , some paintings and the stained glass windows.
