Town center

Piwniczna-Zdrój (until 1998 Piwniczna ) is a town and spa town and seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name in the powiat Nowosądecki of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .

The place is located on the Poprad in the Sandets Beskids .

history

The town was founded in 1348 under the founding privilege of King Casimir the Great of Hanko from Sącz. There was a customs chamber on the border with Hungary.

Even before the First Polish Partitions , the Habsburgs occupied the area around Nowy Sącz in 1770. Two years later, Piwniczna became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Piwniczna became part of the Second Polish Republic . During the Second World War it belonged to the Krakow district in the Generalgouvernement .

The health resort developed in the late 19th century and was visited by the first spa guests in 1884.

From 1975 to 1998 Piwniczna was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship . In 1998 Zdrój (bath) was added to the name.
