Balatongyörök [ bɒlɒtonɟørøk ] is a municipality on the northwestern shore of Lake Balaton (Balaton) in County Zala in Hungary . Balatongyörök is on the E71 , about 8 kilometers east of the town of Keszthely and 20 kilometers from Sármellék Airport . Almost 1,100 people live in an area of 37.59 km² (as of 2011).
history
Originally the place only consisted of the Balaton Street on the lake and had the first bathing tourists as early as the turn of the century in 1900. The well-tended, green and quiet area still has the traditional houses, especially in Kossuth Lajos utca . Balatongyörök was a favorite place for artists and other celebrities from the 19th through the middle of the 20th century. The residential street Petőfi Sándor utca , an avenue of lime trees that was laid out around 1910, also dates from this time . The “Szepkilato” lookout point on the eastern edge of the village offers one of the most beautiful views over Lake Balaton.
However, the aerial photo only shows a holiday complex approx. 700 meters east of Balatongyörök.
Attractions
The place has a small train station as well as a bathing beach and is connected to the regular boat connections on Lake Balaton through its mole with ship landing stage. There is a golf course to the east of the village. The Balaton cycle path runs through the village.
According to a legend, three kilometers west of Balatongyörök, on the 134-meter-high Saint Michael Hill , a votive chapel was built by them thanks to the rescue of 40 fishermen from the ice-cold Lake Balaton in 1739 .
