Wierchomla Wielka ( Ukrainian Верхомля Велика , Werchomlja Welika ) is a village with a Schulzenamt of the municipality of Piwniczna-Zdrój in the powiat Nowosądecki of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .
geography
The place is located in the Sandets Beskids at the mouth of the Vierchomlanka brook in the Poprad river .
history
The place is in the so-called Lemkenland , on its westernmost edge within Poland. Even further to the west are the Ruthenian villages in Slovakia and also the Lemk exclave near Szlachtowa in Poland. In the northwest behind the mountain Kiczera was the ethnically Polish village of Łomnica .
The place was founded in 1595, the daughter settlement Wierchomla Mała six years later. They belonged to the episcopal rule of Muszyna .
During the first partition of Poland , Wierchomla Wielka came to the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).
In 1900 the municipality of Wierchomla Wielka had 209 houses with 1,401 inhabitants, of which 1,359 were Ruthenian-speaking, 41 were Polish-speaking, 1,357 were Greek-Catholic, 30 were Roman-Catholic, and 14 were Jews.
In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Wierchomla Wielka came to the Second Polish Republic . During the Second World War it belonged to the Generalgouvernement .
From 1975 to 1998 Wierchomla Wielka was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship .
