Jedwabne [ jɛd'vabnɛ ] is a small town in northeast Poland in the Podlaskie Voivodeship , 20 km northeast of the district town of Łomża . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 5400 inhabitants.
history
Jedwabne was first mentioned in 1455 and received Magdeburg city rights in 1736 . In 1795 the city came to Prussia , from 1807 it belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and from 1815 to the Russian-controlled Congress Poland . Jedwabne lost its town charter in 1866, but was reassigned it in 1927. During the First World War , 70 percent of the place was destroyed in 1915.
After the beginning of the Second World War , the city was captured by the Germans on September 2, 1939 and handed over to the Soviets at the end of the month. In June 1941, during the German invasion of the Soviet Union , the place was occupied by the German Wehrmacht . On July 10, 1941, around 340 of the city's Jewish residents were murdered in the Jedwabne massacre .
