Memel is a village in the South African province of Free State . Memel is located in the Phumelela municipality in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district . The village is located in the northeast of the province near the borders with the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga . It is located at an altitude of 1,734 meters above sea level and in 2011 had 619 inhabitants. The neighboring township of Zamani had 6523 inhabitants.
The place is named after the city of Memel (today Klaipėda ) in the former East Prussia . The name comes from Old Prussian and means something like 'surrounded by water'.
Memel was founded in 1911 after the end of the Second Boer War . Historical battlefields and some monuments from this war can be visited in and around Memel. Tourism plays a major role for the place. Memel is in close proximity to the Seekoeivlei nature reserve , a 30 square kilometer wetland area . The area around Memel is also ideal for bird watching, as there are 250 to 350 different bird species here.
