Zawichost is a town and seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name in the Powiat Sandomierski of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship in Poland . The small town is 17 km north of Sandomir on the Vistula .

history

Holy Trinity Church in Zavichost

The city was first mentioned in 1148. On June 19, 1205, the Battle of Zawichost took place nearby , in which Roman the Great , Grand Duke of Halych, was defeated by Polish troops under Duke Leszek I of Malopolska and Duke Conrad I of Masovia . Zawichost probably received town charter before 1255. In 1257, Prince Bolesław V the Chaste gave the town, along with 25 surrounding villages, to the Order of the Poor Clares . In the 14th century Zawichost became a royal city and seat of a starost . King Casimir the Great built a castle here that protected the Vistula crossing.
