James Robert Cardinal Knox (born March 2, 1914 in Bayswater , Australia , † June 26, 1983 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Melbourne and a Curial Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

James Robert Knox received the sacrament of ordination on December 22, 1941 after philosophical and theological studies in Australia and Rome . He then worked for eight years as chaplain and vice- rector of the Pontifical College "De Propaganda Fide" . From 1948 to 1950 he was a member of the staff of the Vatican State Secretariat and the Central Committee for the Preparation of the Holy Year 1950. During this time he also worked for Vatican Radio . From 1950 to 1953 he worked as secretary of the Apostolic Legation in Japan .

In 1953 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Melitene and Apostolic envoy for British East Africa , based in Mombasa .

The episcopal ordination received James Robert Knox on November 8 in 1953 by Celso Cardinal Costantini . Co-consecrators were Filippo Bernardini , Titular Archbishop of Antioch in Pisidia and Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , and Antonio Samorè , Titular Archbishop of Ternobus and Secretary of the Congregation for the Extraordinary Mission of the Church. In 1957 the Pope sent him to India as Internuntius and at the same time made him delegation for Burma and Ceylon . From 1962 to 1965 James Robert Knox attended the Second Vatican Council . In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him . Archbishop of Melbourne , 1973 he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria in Vallicella in the college of cardinals . In 1973 he became cardinal prefect of the congregation for divine services founded in 1969. In 1974, James Robert Knox resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Melbourne and from then on headed the Congregation for the Sacraments , which was merged with the Congregation for Worship in 1975. He represented the Pope as papal legate at numerous celebrations around the world. In 1981 he became president of the Pontifical Council for Families . James Robert Knox died on June 26, 1983 in Rome and was in the Cathedral buried in Melbourne.

James Cardinal Knox consecrated a. a. the Archbishops Adam Kozłowiecki and Antonio Magnoni .
