Superjhemp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Superjhemp is the hero of the comic series of the same name , drawn by Roger Leiner and Lucien Czuga . It has been published by the weekly magazine Revue since November 1988 .

It is a Luxembourg comic. Its unique national success is due to the fact that it is specially tailored to its national readership or the congenial Luxembourg worldview. For the same reason, it is virtually unknown outside of Luxembourg. Around 185,000 copies had been sold by 2006, making Superjhemp the best-selling title in Luxembourgish .

Emergence

The figure of the superjhemp was created as a parody of the new wave of national consciousness that emerged in Luxembourg in the 1980s. It is inspired by the Camembert-doped Superdupont , a French character by Gotlib and Jacques Lob , who in turn is a caricature of the American Superman .

In 1987 De Superjhemp géint de Bommeléer (Superjhemp against the bomber) was published for the first time as a serial comic in the Luxembourg magazine Revue ; The first album followed in November 1988. Since then, an album has been published annually until 2014 and the Luxembourg superhero manages to make it into 26 volumes, 3 volumes with short stories and 2 anthologies. The books and volumes were only sold in Luxembourg , and not internationally, because the comics were only written in Luxembourgish. In addition, almost all jokes and metaphors are untranslatable because they make a very strong reference to a Luxembourg reality, so that only Luxembourgers can actually understand it - according to film producer Claude Waringo. In 2018 the film Superjhemp retörns was released ; a total of 60,000 tickets were sold, making the feature film one of the most successful in Luxembourg.

In the Superjhemp comic, not only the Luxembourgers and the typical superheroes are portrayed in a comedic way, but the hero himself appears in an amusing way. Charel Kuddel, alias Superjhemp, represents the apparently significant Luxembourger in his own way. He draws his superpowers from beer and Kachkéis (German: cooked cheese ), a specialty of the Luxembourg brand Luxlait . He flies with his hands in his pockets, as a stereotypical prejudice - according to the illustrator Roger Leiner - says that a real Luxembourger always has his hands in his pockets.

The book De Littel Superjhemp was published in January 2014 and immediately made it to first place on the Luxembourg bestseller list. The comic tells the story of the childhood of the superhero Superjhemp in his home village Heihatechnachnidebauchwéi (German: I've never had a stomachache here), where - already blessed with superpowers - he makes the area unsafe with his friends.

content

In every episode, Superjhemp has to save the country of luxury citizens from one or more bad guys like "Filip von Filoux", "Jessica Jaguar" or other political terrorists. Superjhemp is “Charel Kuddel” in real life, a Luxembourg civil servant. In his adventures he always comes across caricatures of well-known Luxembourgers. Current Luxembourg and international events are also processed in the comics.

Movie

Production and publication

Shooting for the Luxembourg film De Superjhemp retörns began in March 2017 under the direction of Félix Koch, produced by Claude Waringo ( Samsa Film ). In October 2018 the film adaptation of their comic hero Superjhemp, which the authors had longed for, was released in the cinema; With around 60,000 tickets sold, the feature film is the most successful film in the Luxembourg film industry. Although Roger Leiner, one of the comic book authors, unfortunately passed away in December 2016, his old friend and colleague Lucien Czuga is certain: "He would have liked the film". He confesses, visibly moved, "This film is for him [Roger]".

Around 2010, the producer Claude Waringo had the idea of redesigning the nationally known comic book character Superjhemp into a film character, but he lacked the right film director. Until he had the opportunity at the Lux Film Festival to see the short film Die Ravioli Ritter by Félix Koch, the style of which he found suitable for his concept. Félix Koch has been an avid fan of the Superjhemp comics since childhood, which resulted in a uniquely successful production in this collaboration. Claude Waringo emphasizes that the casting, i.e. the entire distribution of roles, completely corresponded to the ideas of the participants. For the role of the superhero, nobody seemed to be better suited for the actors than the Luxembourg actor André Jung. He has often dreamed of it, but buried the dream about 30 years ago; and then it did happen and he was extremely happy and delighted with this chance to embody the Luxembourg superhero.

The goal was not a precise film adaptation of an existing album, but only to adopt the basic characteristics and specifically important properties in a completely redesigned story, according to Désirée Nosbusch, Charel Kuddels (Superjhemp) wife Félicie Kuddel.

The film was shown in Berlin in May 2019 at the Genrenale ; The film was even released as Superjhemp returns in September 2019 in Sudbury , Ontario in Canada with French / English subtitles at the Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival.

partner

The whole film represents a total of 22 slightly modified but easily recognizable well-known Luxembourg brand names; The ideas for this come from Myriam Schmit, who is responsible for managing communication and partnerships. She herself had the ideas for the rewritten brand names such as Juxlait (Luxembourgish dairy Luxlait ), Juxair (Lux. Airline Luxair ), Kaktus (Lux. Supermarket chain Cactus ), Librairie Fernster (Lux. Bookstore Librairie Ernster ) or Voyages Émile Wibbel (Lux. Travel company Voyages Émile Weber ).

action

Nobody knows why and where the superhero Superjhemp, who worked many years ago, disappeared; And nobody, not even his wife Félicie and his son, knows that the cozy civil servant Charel Kuddel is the lost superhero. In addition to his support for the police, he also offered protection to the "petty ducal" family.

However, when Charel himself witnesses how the crown of Luxembourg is stolen, he feels called to put on his hero costume again in order to become superjhemp again.

In addition to many emotional and physical obstacles and overwhelming, the hero has to make an important decision: either he reveals his true identity to his family, and can avoid difficult, unpleasant situations and clear up a number of questions - or he keeps his secret, which has been kept for years, forever himself and will be silent forever.

exhibition

The exhibition Superjhemp ënnert dem Röntgengebléck will take place from June 4, 2019 to January 20, 2020 in Mersch, Luxembourg and tells the creation and history of the Luxembourg comic hero Superjhemp.

Superjhemp is portrayed as a typical Luxembourgish man who earns his living as a civil servant and can use his superpowers to protect his beloved home, Luxembourg, from threats and disorder.

The exhibition offers a general picture of the story of the hero Superjhemp, and in addition to unique drawings by the artist Roger Leiner, you will find a good introduction to the creation and maintenance of the national comic hero.
