Roger Leiner (born February 2, 1955 in Wiltz , † December 29, 2016 in Ettelbrück ) was a Luxembourgish comic artist, illustrator and caricaturist.

Life

He spent his school days in Diekirch and studied art et plastiques in Strasbourg at the University of “des sciences humaines”. In Luxembourg he worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Economic Affairs from 1979 to 1986, after which he devoted himself to drawing and painting as a full-time draftsman and caricaturist until his death.

In 1980 he worked for the drawings in film for the Luxembourg newspaper Tageblatt , and since 1982 he has painted weekly for the Luxembourg magazine Das Letzebuerger Land , in order to later also work for the Revue .

Leiner is the father of three children. He lived in Mersch until the end of his life .

Superjhemp

From 1987 to 2014 he and his friend Lucien Czuga brought the Superjhemp onto the market, the two authors have released a total of 29 editions. In every issue, the Superjhemp had to save Luxembourg from the "evil" or several "bad guys". Well-known Luxembourgers appear again and again in the caricatures, and Luxembourg and international events are also processed. Superjhemp was extremely successful in Luxembourg, with 185,000 copies sold in 2006. This makes Superjhemp the best-selling book in Luxembourg. In October 2018 De Superjhemp retörns was released in cinemas, a feature film based on the characters of Superjhemp.

More comics

Besides Superjhemp, Lucien Czuga and Roger Leiner worked together on other projects and released a number of independent albums. In the comic De stolen A (1991) based on historical facts they tell the story of the steel producer ARBED .

In 1992 both published the socially critical comic Jimmy . It tells the story of a young man who slips into the drug scene. The album Vum Siggy bis bei d'City combines historical facts with a fictional frame story. The comic, commissioned by the City of Luxembourg in 2013 for the anniversary of the founding of Luxembourg in 1050, tells the story of the city. The comic was then published in 2015 in Luxembourgish and French. After the end of the Superjhemp series in 2013, two albums with short stories about the childhood of superheroes were created with the title Littel Superjhemp . The Luxembourg Lexicon , a collection of terms from the Superjhemp universe, was published in 2008.

In 2018, the feature film Superjhemp retörns about the superhero was shot under the direction of Félix Koch , with André Jung , Désirée Nosbusch , Jules Werner and Jean-Paul Maes in the leading roles . With over 60,000 tickets sold, it is the most successful Luxembourg film. Superjhemp retörns was also shown at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival and the Starring Europe Festival in Los Angeles .
