Superdupont [ sypɛʁdypɔ̃ ] is a French comic series by Jacques Lob and Marcel Gotlib , which first appeared on September 21, 1972 in the youth magazine Pilote and was continued from 1975 in Fluide Glacial . The series, which is characterized by the individual drawing styles of different cartoonists , parodies the style of superhero comics as well as cultural idiosyncrasies, scientific achievements and typical products of France. This is defended by the ultra-patriotic and openly chauvinist antihero Superdupont in a tireless fight against the subversive forces of the sectarian secret organization Anti-France .
Publication history
Jacques Lob developed the character and adventures of Superdupont , working with various cartoonists. The first draftsman of the series and at the same time co- scenarist was and is Marcel Gotlib. This first sequel to the series appeared on September 21, 1972 in issue 672 of the French youth magazine Pilote . Since Gotlib was busy with editorial work and drawings on other series, Alexis took over the execution of the drawings.
In 1972 Gotlib left the Pilote editorial team and founded the magazine L'Écho des Savanes with Claire Bretécher and Nikita Mandryka , but only after he founded his own magazine, Fluide Glacial , on April 1, 1975 with his childhood friend Jacques Diament Superdupont continued there from 1975. While working on the episode La croisade de superdupont (II) Alexis (1946-1977) died unexpectedly at the age of 30 years following rupture of a brain aneurysm and Gotlib finished the drawings of the episode in his own style. Jean Solé then took over the drawing. In the 1980s and 1990s, other cartoonists such as Daniel Goossens (author and draftsman at Fluide Glacial), Neal Adams (specialist in the drawings of American superheroes) and Alexandre Coutelis (former colleague at Pilote and newspaper cartoonist ) contributed to their individual style Success of the series.
To Gotlib's chagrin, the French nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen and his Front National party took advantage of Superdupont's popularity as early as the late 1980s . This development and the death of the scriptwriter Jacques Lob (1932–1990) are likely reasons for the suspension of the series in the 1990s.
Only in October 2006 the series in Fluide Glacial was continued on the initiative of Lefred Thouron; Gotlib and Thouron wrote new scenarios and Solé implemented them in drawings.
From 1977, complete episodes of Superdupont have been published in six comic albums by Fluide Glacial and Audie / Fluide Glacial ; In 1984, Volumes 1 and 2 were published in German by Volksverlag .
The new start of the series was conceived and drawn up over two years by Gotlieb, François Boucq and Karim Belkrouf . In 2015 Dargaud published previously unpublished stories as Volume 1 ( Renaissance ).
Genre and presentation
Superdupont is a parody of France as the Grande Nation and of the fear of losing French achievements, values and habits and of having to defend them against foreign countries ( l'étranger , literally 'the foreign'). The protagonist and antihero, who deals with the pathos of American superheroes and is entangled in the usual course of action of this genre, sees in the cultural influence from outside - and in foreigners in general - a threat to his fatherland (la patrie) and is thus a caricature of the chauvinistic National pride on the one hand and nationalist paranoia and xenophobia on the other.
The series consists of completed, often multi-part episodes (mostly with a prologue and / or epilogue ), which sometimes follow one another in time, sometimes tell in flashbacks of Superdupont's earlier adventures or his youth. The large number of episodes - especially those that deal with the relationship between Superdupont and Georgette - are to be understood as adult comics in which there are also very clear erotic drawings. The ironic-parodic theme and narrative style of the series has been retained for over 40 years, but the graphic appearance of Superdupont is characterized by the very different drawing styles - from two-dimensional cartoonism to detailed realism. The episodes from 1972 to the 1990s are inked in black and white; from the 2000s and the restart by Thouron, Superdupont appears in color through the work of the colorist Ngo Ngam.
The series has several running gags : for example, the arrival of the super (anti) hero in the scenario is associated with bursting doors, shattering windows and flying bricks; many episodes end with a successful defense against an anti-France attack, but the protagonist leaves clearly visible collateral damage; when Superdupont raves about the beauty of French cultural assets or the virtues of the French with an upward look, it literally moves him to tears.

The mission
At night in Paris, the young Jean Dupont is led through a mysterious light to the Arc de Triomphe , where he finds an entrance through which he enters a burial hall deep below the monument . There the Unknown Soldier, who died in the First World War near Verdun , awaits him , who reveals that Jean is his father and that a special task awaits him . Over the next seven days and nights, the young man goes through a magical ritual and becomes Superdupont , the Super-French (Super-Français) who - like his father before him - will defend France and its culture.
Since that experience, Superdupont has had super powers and senses (similar to Superman ) and proudly wears the colors of the national flag (like Captain America ). He characterizes himself as follows: "Je ne suis qu'un modeste surhomme, un simple justier, qui n'aspire qu'à servir sa patrie."
In the third part of the episode about the stolen standard meter , he is confirmed in his mission during a vision from the very highest authority: "The Great Builder" (Le Grand Architecte) appears to him and announces that it is France's job - and therefore Superdupont's job - to do the job to proclaim “the right measure” (la juste mesure) and the “metrical truth” (la vérité métrique) to other nations and even to the whole universe, to the ignorant (ignorants) and unbelievers (infidèles) .
Superdupont receives a third confirmation of his mission through Jesus , who has taken French citizenship, wears a beret under the crown of thorns and has decided to replace all necessary utensils for Holy Mass with French products.
In emergency situations, Superdupont receives female help by pleading with the French national symbol Marianne , who has practical advice ready for him.
Authorized in this way and strengthened in its patriotic attitude, Superdupont manages time and again to fulfill its mission by solving absurdly difficult challenges and to defend France against the machinations of Anti-France .
The man
In terms of physiognomy , Superdupont fulfills the typical cliché of a French: He is middle-aged, has a set on his stomach and a high forehead with carefully combed hair (which you only see in very private situations, since he wears a military beret on his missions ) and will sometimes shown with a mustache , sometimes with a Clark Gable beard . His language is stilted and pathetic and in moments of surprise he uses ancient, religiously connoted curses.

Superdupont has super powers similar to Superman. As a good patriot, he is loyal to the government and supports the French economy by standing up for the consumption of red wine and Camembert and other French products and, in a conversation with the illustrator Solé, defends himself against being drawn with Chinatusche (Encre de Chine) . In the same vein , he consumes five packets of Gauloises a day, but he does not light the cigarettes because he does not want to violate the health minister's anti-smoking campaign, and he pays his income tax the day after the expiration date so that he can add the 10th % Fine to the state treasury.

Anti-France (also Antifrance ) is a sectarian secret organization, a personified caricature of all real and unreal problems that France has or believes to have with other states and non-French in general .
The aim of this organization is to ridicule and destroy France, the Grande Nation , the land of freedom, equality, brotherhood ; in the words of Superdupont : "... ?? une société secrète et anonyme composée d'étrangers jaloux de la prospérité de notre pays! ”To achieve this goal, to discredit French politics, paralyze the administration and sabotage the industry, Anti-France mostly uses sophisticated, foreign technology such as the installation of a distributor of foreign particles (particules étrangères) on the Eiffel Tower to depress the French population, a giant magnet to slow down the telephone time announcement - and thus all of France - or a robot factory in which an inedible replacement Camembert is made. But Anti-France does not shy away from stealing the Eiffel Tower or using gonococci as biological weapons.
Anti-France agents usually appear in groups, wear tight, black full-body suits that only leave the eyes and nose / mouth area free and speak anti-French (Anti-Français) , a gibberish made up of German , English , Spanish , Italian and other languages, but formulated in such a way that the reader can decipher the statements. The sect-like character of Anti-France is portrayed in such a way that their secret gatherings take place in the Ku Klux Klan fashion and that the agents in the fight against Superdupont self-despisingly and laughingly accept death, while proclaiming their belief in the final victory : "L'Anti-France vaincra!"
After Superdupont uncovered and thwarted several acts of sabotage by Anti-France , he himself gets caught in the crosshairs of the organization and attempts are made to uncover his weak points with the help of undercover agent Georgette Doublanski and then to eliminate him - which almost succeeds.
Georgette Doublanski
Georgette Doublanski is the tragic love of Superdupont - and vice versa . She is a young, attractive woman who worked as a policewoman in normal life , but who was won over by Anti-France as an undercover agent. Through her use as an erotic decoy , the superhero falls in love with her and she succeeds in discovering “the weaknesses in Superdupont's armor”. Anti-France can take him by surprise and almost knock him out, but Georgette has also fallen in love with Superdupont , saves him at the last second and both escape.
After confessing her life story to Superdupont - she is the daughter of a French woman who was seduced and then abandoned by an unknown exotic foreigner; It was only through this split personality (Georgette himself describes himself as a hybrid being in which angel and demon live side by side) that Anti-France was able to gain access to her - and after a passionate affair in Georgette's apartment, Superdupont hands her over to the French judiciary, because in his words "she owes a debt to her fatherland" (une dette envers la patrie) .
When Georgette goes on a hunger strike after two years of imprisonment and seems capable of extremes, she saves Superdupont by hypnotizing her into a fantasy world in which she is married to him and they have four children together, but Georgette has more Remain 13 years in the prison fortress of Sainte-Marie-Les-Roquettes , the fortress of the lost girls (forteresse des filles perdues) .

Superdupont Junior
When the series starts again in 2015, Volume 1 ( Renaissance ) introduces Superdupont Junior, the son of Superdupont, who has the same powers as his father. Renaissance treated the impressive birth, the first admissions to the superhero life by the father (known as "Su père characterized dupont" is) and Juniors first heroic act: he destroyed completely the slip angle of the "Pope of darkness." Superdupont out of series
In 1982 Jérôme Savary adapted Superdupont with his Grand Magic Circus as a musical comedy under the title Superdupont ze Show . The show, with Alice Sapritch in a burlesque role, premiered in the Théâtre municipal de Béziers in September 1982, had 10 performances in the Nouveau Théâtre de Nice (November 17-27, 1982) and ended with 40 performances in the Théâtre national de L 'Odéon (from December 1982). On this occasion, in October 1982 the publishing house des Theâtre de Béziers published the illustrated book Le Grand Magic Circus SuperDupont ze show! out.
There is a statuette by Superdupont , limited to 2222 pieces, about 20 centimeters tall , which shows him in a stooped position with a stretched fist on an oversized camembert.
In 1996, a 25-minute stunt show entitled Main basse sur la Joconde (roughly translated as Hands off the Mona Lisa ) was conceived in Parc Asterix , which has changed over the years. In addition to his name SuperMarcel , the hero also shows similarities in costume with Superdupont .
